SAILING LESSONS AT HBC

Sailing Lesson Information

Haven Beach Club sailing lessons are structured based on ability, with a focus on the basics, safety, fun and developing a lifelong love of sailing. Held every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from the third week of June through mid-August (specific dates will be supplied annually), lessons are progressively more challenging,  allowing sailors the option to work toward joining our racing team.  Classes are held rain or shine.

Requirements:

  • First-year sailors must be 8 years old by June 1, or have completed second grade.

  • All students must pass a swim test in the bay on the first day of class.  This test is for the safety of all sailors and instructors. The test includes swimming 50 yards, treading water and securing a life jacket while in the water.

  • Sailors are required to wear water shoes at all times, have a US Coast Guard approved PFD with a whistle and follow program and club rules.

  • All sailors (with the exception of Opti Beginner 1) must arrive to class 15 minutes before the start of class in order to be rigged and ready at the start of class.

  • All sailors are responsible for derigging, rinsing and racking their boats when class is complete.  Sailors must derig their boat if they choose to leave during a class. Instructors will not be held responsible for equipment left out of place.  This includes your personal belongings

  • Sailors are required to supply their own boat with the exception of first-year sailors who may pay a usage fee to take lessons using HBC owned Optis. The availability is on a first registered and paid basis.

  • After the first year, sailors are required to supply their own boat. A summer land-based slip fee is charged for all boats on club property. Used Optis, Lasers and 420's can be purchased on the island. There is no need for a sailor to purchase a new boat. If the boats are well maintained, they can generally be sold for about the same price.

CLASS OPTIONS

Opti Beginner 1

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

The Opti Beginner class is for sailors in their first year of sailing and is designed to teach safety skills, terminology, rigging techniques and basics of how to sail. Sailors will master their skills on land before moving to the water and sailing independently. For those interested, beginner races are optional.

Opti Intermediate

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Intended for those who have completed Opti Beginner, Opti Intermediate classes are designed to further the beginner class curriculum. Along with enhanced basic racing skills, intermediate sailors work on the mechanics of sailing and are encouraged to participate in HBC Saturday Series as well as the weekly island interclub races or other regattas, as recommended by their coach.

Sunfish Cruisers

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

The Sunfish Cruiser class is designed for older students who want to sail but not necessarily compete, or younger sailors interested in trying a different boat. Designed to build a lifelong love for sailing, this class operates at a less rigorous pace, with less focus on competition, although students are welcome - and even encouraged - to compete in HBC Saturday Series, or the weekly island interclub races.
