Parental responsibilities

The backbone of HBC is volunteerism, and to make our racing team enjoy smooth sailing, we need help from our parents. Among the activities instructors will ask for parent assistance are:

  • Saturday Series set up and clean up
  • Organizing/running the LBIYRA interclub hosted by HBC
  • Transporting boats to interclubs and area regattas

In addition for all Wednesday interclubs and other regattas, parents and/or sailors are responsible for:

  • Signing up and communicating with instructors their child’s desire to compete in regattas outside of the LBIYRA interclubs
  • Arrange for and/or transport child’s boat and gear to and from competition sites
  • Registering child at weekly interclubs and signing waiver form
  • Removing dolly from the loading area
  • Either staying on site at regattas/interclubs or being within a short drive so as to collect their child in case of illness or emergency
  • Assist sailor and instructor with loading boats on dollies and transporting gear back to HBC

Regattas

Regattas are a fun way to enjoy additional competitive opportunities and measure a sailor's skill against others in and around the island. Our coaches will recommend when a sailor is ready for a regatta and offer suggestions for appropriate levels of competition. There are various regattas throughout the course of the summer, available to all levels from beginners to racers. Those interested should first participate in our HBC Saturday Series.

Parents are responsible for signing up sailors, and ensuring that all required memberships, such as U.S. sailing, are met.  These responsibilities include:

  • Signing up and communicating with instructors their child’s desire to compete in regattas outside of the LBIYRA interclubs
  • Arrange for and/or transport child’s boat and gear to and from competition sites>

You MUST ask your instructor before signing up for any of the above regattas. Instructors have to plan accordingly to get both boats and instructors to these regattas and need warning to do this.
